REGATA DEL SOL AL SOL
HISTORY

Vista superior del barco de vela

With the support of Mr. Miguel Alemán Valdez, then president of the National Tourism Council, this Regatta began, which runs every year between St. Petersburg, Florida and Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo.

This competition and the Regata al Sol, which now runs from Pensacola to Isla Mujeres, are the oldest sailing sporting events between the United States of America and Mexico.

The success of this event is the wonderful participation of the port authorities, the Secretary of the Navy and the Municipal and State governments of Quintana Roo, who year after year support these events.

It should be noted that in these Regattas there are no monetary prizes, only “Perpetual Trophies”. The trophies that the winners receive are called "Perpetual" and are returned the following year to be awarded to the next winner, who only keeps participation medals for the place they occupied in the competition.

The Mexican Navy, through the Secretaries of the Navy and officers of the V Military Naval Region, as always and in support of the Isla Mujeres Yacht Club, assign ships for the goal and custody of the sailboats while they are in Mexican waters.

The SCT, Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes of Mexico, through the General Coordination of Ports and Merchant Marine of the Republic, has issued special instructions so that all Port Captains from Progreso, Yucatan to Cozumel, Quintana Roo, give special attention to visitors to these events.

In addition to the crew members on the yachts of the Regattas, many relatives of the competitors will come to Isla Mujeres by air to celebrate the years of success of these Regattas.

The tourist and political success of these events is due to the intervention and protection that the Secretary of the Navy of Mexico grants to the participants of these, which are the oldest sporting events between the Florida Peninsula and the Yucatan Peninsula.
